Trussardi (Original, Eau de Toilette)

Another discontinued fragrant gem is the Italian vintage creation Trussardi by Trussardi, designed and launched by the Italian designer house in 1983. Although this fragrance was marketed for women, I find it to be completely unisex, a perfect juxtaposition of notes that were typically considered feminine (floral) and masculine (leather, woods).

Trussardi by Trussardi is to me a tactile fragrance.

Perhaps because of its iconic faux croc bottle and “stitched” leather brand logo, or perhaps because it was made by a designer known for its leather clothing and accessories, this is a fragrance I always associate to a textural sensation. Sniffing it evokes the experience of running my hand over smooth, high-quality leather. It also clearly calls to mind memories of my mom’s purses, and the way they smelled and felt to the touch, as I curiously peeked in closets and drawers.

This is a fragrance that embodies many of the qualities I love in a perfume – a leather chypre with a daring yet minimalistic quality and an unmistakable imprint of creativity and elegance.

A blaze of well-balanced notes – sharp, green, clean, floral, leathery, woody – harmoniously coexist to create a charming and refined effect. Trussardi by Trussardi has a bold and extroverted personality without being abrasive or aggressive.

The fragrance opens with astringent, green, and slightly bitter nuances (bergamot, galbanum, hyacinth) that convey a pleasantly sparkling effect.

The scent is enlivened by a classic floral bouquet (rose, jasmine, lily of the valley) that I detect as a little soapy, and, later, flows into a green, dry base (styrax, leather, woods, oakmoss), leaving a long lasting, sophisticated vintage mark.

I reviewed this classic, timeless staple of Italian perfumery from my own 50 ml bottle.

The notes are listed as they appear on Basenotes:

Top: Coriander, galbanum, hyacinth, bergamot

Heart: Ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, tuberose, orris, geranium, lily of the valley

Base: cedar, sandalwood, patchouli, styrax, olibanum, oakmoss, vanilla, amber, musk, leather

Trussardi by Trussardi might still be available in select stores as Eau de Toilette in 100, 50, and 25 ml bottles, but is no longer produced.
