Gallup Perfume Angora Oud

Named after the founder’s family name, Gallup Perfume is an independent and artisanal fragrance, bath, and body line based in Connecticut. It was a pleasure for me to connect with Amyllia, line owner and perfumer, after spritzing her beautiful creation, Angora Oud.

A lover of the sciences, technology, and non-fiction books, Amyllia stumbled into creating fragrances as she began to experiment with flavors and to realize their strong connection with scents and aromas. She was naturally drawn to the technical aspects of making perfume but was also captivated by scent’s ability to evoke memories. After smelling a particular muguet (lily of the valley) fragrance oil, she was transported back, as a five-year-old girl, to the large patch of these flowers in an old Victorian House in Great Barrington, MA.

Since then, she’s been seeking to bring back and bottle memories. Therefore, rather than focusing on a specific concept, Gallup Perfume is all about recreating sensations and being transported back in space and time.

As she sought to vividly evoke memories, experiences, and sensations, Amyllia thought of a beautiful tightly knitted angora and satin cape her grandmother had left her and set out to build an accord that conveyed soft furs, cozy vibes, and a sense of calm and relaxation.

This fragrance is to me all about sweet piquancy and zesty fruits (osmanthus, clove, lime, orange) swathed in fuzzy layers of a pleasing angora accord (no real rabbit materials were tinctured or used). The angora sweater sensation is conferred very well, but I also think of soft cotton balls and fluffy bunny tails.

The floral aspect (violet) remains in the background and seems to come more through as edible, yet ethereal sugared petals, the kind you would decorate a cake with.

The fragrance is rounded by a buttery base composed of a smooth, lightly animalic oud, silky woods, and full-bodied musks. A slight camphoraceous vein (perhaps conferred by the pine) prevents the whole composition from becoming heavy and overly sweet.

I find myself reaching out for Angora Oud when I want something bold yet soothing to envelop me all day long.

Notes are listed as they appear on the line’s website:

Top Notes: Osmanthus Absolute, Lime, Orange

Middle Notes: Angora, Violet, Clove

Base Notes: Oud, Pine, Wood, Musk

I reviewed Angora Oud from a 50 ml bottle I won from a giveaway kindly hosted by Kim (TheFragranceDoll) and Amyllia (Gallup Perfumes). I am grateful to both for this opportunity.

The fragrance is available as a Limited Edition Extrait in 50 ml bottles, 10 ml travel vials, and 2.5 ml samples. The line’s logo with the crest and coat of arms on the houses’ packaging dates back to the 1500s in England. Check out Gallup Perfume’s other offerings on the website.

I look forward to trying the Madison and Rose hair mist!
